COUPLES COUNSELLING

Groundwork couples counselling asks one basic question: “Is this relationship bringing each of you personal transcendence?” Transcendence means personal growth, overcoming limitations, finding the capacity to connect and to love, and to be a more real person in the world.

Living alone is easy. We do what we want. But we’re also stuck within our comfort zones, stuck within the boundaries of what we know, and what we can do. Other people can have an enabling effect on us, showing us different ways of being, taking us to places and experiences we never knew existed. And giving us the opportunity to love and be loved. But other people can also disable us, invalidate us, lay heavy expectations on us.

Couples in trouble need to ask themselves whether their relationship is enabling or disabling. Whether they feel more like themselves or less like themselves. Groundwork couples counselling provides a space in which couples can more easily explore this question, can speak more frankly, and can hear the other, perhaps for the first time.

If there is a way to convert anger, resentment or fear into mutual transcendence, Groundwork will help you find it. If not, if the relationship really is disabling, Groundwork can help you end it in a spirit of love and forgiveness.

Life is all about arrivals and departures. We try to travel together. But if we can’t be on the same train, we can learn to kiss the other goodbye.
